HOW TO STYLE A COFFEE TABLE

It is a center point of every formal and casual living area, so why not showcase it as a focal point? Coffee tables serve many roles in homes: from a landing for drinks, feet or a television remote to a place to display meaningful decorative pieces. When it comes to how to style a coffee table, some may see it as a tricky task but with the right accessories, it is a great way to add interest to a space. We have included a few tips and basic rules on how to create a well-balanced decorative design for all types of coffee tables.

1. HOW TO STYLE A COFFEE TABLE: THE RULE OF THREE

The rule of three has long been an implemented design guideline. The Carlisle Home Design Blog explains the rule of three as, “a design principle which affects every room of your home. It dictates layout, size and shape of objects, the work triangle of a kitchen, even the color, pattern and fabric designs of your room.” They continue, “the human brain likes to easily puzzle things together and with three you can always find the center point and balance.”

Start with three very different objects and explore different arrangements, finding a balance that feels right for your coffee table.

Depending on the size and style of a coffee table, grouping pieces together is another way to create balance. When using two tables, a glass table two-tiered table, or square table, symmetry works well as a way to achieve balance.

When grouping pieces together, the grouping represents one piece, which means multiple objects can be used as one coherent design. Depending on the size of a coffee table, the rule of three could be expanded to any odd number, especially when grouping pieces together.

Using objects with varying heights will keep the eye moving and create more visual appeal. In good design, the eyes should dance from one piece to another, never getting stuck at one level.Displaying an assortment of shapes on a coffee table is a way to create interest. Think of items as simple as a rectangular book with a round candle and a square decorative box

Whether it be a splurge piece purchased on a travel expedition or an old family heirloom, what better way to display these precious pieces than in the middle of the room where they will receive the attention they deserve. Plus unusual objects always serve their purpose as fabulous conversation starters.
